Not only could they not handle any more destruction, but my oldest son was there. I stalked the news. I googled the storm path often. And I prayed.....alot!
Well the storm did hit on October 4th and 5th and while it doesn't appear that way to some, I believe that God did have his hand in the path of the storm because it was predicted to be much worse that it ended up. As the storm passed the Western side of Haiti, it veered off course away from the main part of the land. The final reports after the storm were that the Southern most parts of the impoverished country were destroyed beyond belief but that the main part of the land, including where my son was, was in fact spared from the most destruction eye of the storm and only suffered immense amounts of rain. Now, don't get me wrong-this was a disastrous storm. Entire cities were wiped away. Mud slides occurred. Crops are destroyed. Families are torn as a result of deaths and destruction.
I am simply saying that it could have been worse had God not interceded.
Fast forward to October 10th, not even a full week after the storm. My friend, Connie, post on her Facebook wall that her, along with some family, were traveling to Haiti to not only see some people, but also to work down south where the devastation was the worst.
I simply commented on the post "Jealous. Wish I could go." And she responded with-"Why don't you?"
My wheels began to turn and the plans started flooding my mind. I had my passport. I didn't have any Scentsy parties scheduled. The kids are old enough that it is not as big of a deal when I leave. So I called Paul. He is used to my crazy ideas and plans. And he even humors me most of the time. Upon a small discussion, the agreement was if the funding came in then I was meant to go.
Paul and I make enough money to pay our bills and raise our family. But we do not have a bank account bursting with dough. That has never stopped a mission trip before though. I added it up not long ago and the Lord has provided somewhere around $25,000 to our family solely for mission work! So my work in fundraising began!
Now I didn't want Louis, my son, to know that I was coming. My plan was to surprise him by just standing in front of him. So I was being secretive on Facebook. So I simply posted this:
The plans was that I needed roughly $900 to cover my flights. I was going to room with my friend Jordan while there. Beyond that, I would just need a bit of cash for some food.
The private messages started coming in and I would tell them the plan. At first, I just wanted verbal commitments to see if I could even bring in that money that fast. Within a few hours, I had $750 committed to me. At that point, in my mind, it was a go. I started messaging friends and asking them to go ahead and start sending the money my way. I was confident!
But just when I started to feel confident and comfortable with the situation-Satan got pissed!
I got a message that the hotel would not let me just crash in Jordan's room. They now charged per person and it would be another $390 to cover hotel and food. (all-inclusive) That was $390 + $150 not accounted for. Over $500+ that we did not have in our family budget. How was I going to make this work? I didn't know.
I began sending messages to friends and family. I knew I was to go on this trip!!!
So I started thinking out side of the box.
Ah-ha! I figured it out! LuLaRoe!
For those of you that don't know, LLR is a clothing line that I love (and have too much to admit). Well the deal is that LLR holds its value--something very odd for clothing. If anything, sometimes the value increases on hard to find prints--some of which I had.
I started digging through my closet and pulling out some of my beloved clothing and photographing it. I began writing descriptions of what I had on a LLR trading site. I was just about to hit "POST" when a text came through on my phone. It said "We would like to give you the $900 for flights."
WHAT? OMGoodness! Are you SERIOUS?
Yes-it was true. $900 was sent via square cash in a matter of minutes! That meant I had the $ for flights. I had the $ for hotel and food. AND I now had $$$ left over to buy supplies to pack and take there or buy when we arrived.
BUT WAIT--I AM NOT DONE WITH THIS PART OF THE STORY!
---REWIND--- A few days earlier, I had picked up a dining room table from a friend with the agreement that when my existing table sold, I would pay her $300 for hers. Well my table sold and I had the money to pay her. I had set up a coffee date with her to chit chat and give her the money. Since I was so busy prepping for my trip now, I was canceling the coffee date but wanted to run the money by to her. When I texted her, her response was "Nope. God told me last night the money was yours. I just didn't know why until now!"
I posted and asked for $900 for flights. God provided well over $2000 along with other friends bringing items like soap, deodorant, medicine, hygiene items, and clothing.
2 days later, I was at the airport at 4am ready to board a flight to Port au Prince, Haiti!
